in his own words...

A baby, gray sparrow snuggled into the folds of my blue, buttoned-down shirt. I moved slightly -- gave her a nudge to fly away. But the sparrow burrowed in even more. She had just flown into me from out of nowhere. Onlookers buzzed and laughed, reaching for cellphones to take pictures on that sunny day last spring as I sat with sightseers on a sidewalk bench on 13th and Pennsylvania Ave., NW. I'm a DC tour guide. And in a city of memorials -- a bird nestling in my shirt is my most memorable tour so far. ------------------------------------------------------------ I was a radio news reporter for 30 years (Voice of America), writing scripts on national, international affairs, and life in these United States -- voicing my stories for broadcast to milliions. Fact is, I concluded finally, the news is too often negative. And who can stand that 24 hours a day! It's not healthy. It wasn't for me. I've gone back to reading the daily newspaper -- and five years ago, started tour-guiding. I'm literally a new man, doiing essentially a one-man show about the stories and lessons of history -- and relating to people eye-to-eye -- rather than reading a script in an otherwise empty radio studio -- although writing for broadcast was a great exercise at storytelling. Example of me, "Mr. Tour Guide," asking my group a question: "Why is there that giant dome on the US Capitol modeled after St. Paul's Cathedral in London and other cathedrals? What about the key US constitutional issue of religion/state separation?" Answer: The cathedral-like Capitol dome represents Jefferson's point that, he said, a "Creator" made us all equal, with a right to equal representation in Congress. The Dome's cathedral design symbolizes our mystical link to the Creator in an otherwise secular state. In sum, I'm a storyteller who knows his history and philosophy -- an actor with the aim of uplifting the human spirit -- and an empathetic guy, an idealist. ---------------------------------------- My
