Imagine driving around town with someone who is on speaking terms with the local ghosts, sees buildings and ice rinks and arches that aren't there anymore, and knows many of the people whose names grace the street signs. I live with my head in the clouds sometimes, but the view up here is beautiful and I'd love to share it over coffee, or fish and chips with malt vinegar. I'm looking for someone to explore the universe with while living life day by day and taking joy in its little wonders. While watching a movie, we share popcorn with sprinkled Tabasco sauce. Afterward, we consider if Sidonie Gabrielle Colette ever met Oscar Wilde, and if they would have hit it off if they did. Over coffee, we might consider where chocolate and chilies and coffee came from, or the virtues of the job title, "barista," or the beauty of the foam art, or my struggle to decide if you eyes or your outfit are more outstanding. Another night, we might see a college production of some obscure Greek tragedy, followed by takeout. I lived with a flower shop owner in New Zealand for a while growing up, and even since then I've love flowers, a pure indiscriminate love uninformed by any real ability to identify them or make them grow. Sometimes I like to drive through random Denver neighborhoods in late spring and early summer to see the flowers, admire their gargoyles and consider their tragically bad xeriscaping aesthetics. I'm a package deal. I have two brilliant, popular middle schoolers. Teens and tweens can be sulky, but allowances must be made for them. Dads are allowed to embarrass them. Dad's girlfriends are not. And, I take their opinions seriously just as I would take yours. I prefer tweed brown jackets and salmon shirts to pinstripes and rep ties, given the choice, but sometimes circumstances demand something outside your comfort zone.
