Dining out

in her own words...

You have just completed your 300-page autobiography. Please submit page 217. I grew up in California. The Golden State. The state of Hollywood and Santa Monica, the Beach Boys, surfing and sun tans. The state where the sun shines and every one says “Isn’t the weather wonderful?” And in the back of my head, a little voice says “Nope. The sun maybe shining, but the weather is far from wonderful.” Because I, like a good NOr-Cal girl, love the fog and the rain. I love the fog so think that you feel like you could lie down on it and go to sleep. I like the rain so strong that you feel like you should probably change your name to Noah, round up all the animals in twos and get started on that ark. I don’t ski. I don’t snowboard. I hate hot chocolate and sitting by the fireside. All year long, when I think of winter, I get shivers down my spine and feel excited. Excited, because, as soon as that good old San Francisco rain starts coming down, I know that I’ll be grabbing my jacket, not raincoat mind, my hat and my rather unattractive knee high army green galoshes and taking off into the hills behind my house for a long, long hike through the downpour. For me, being out in the rain clears my head. It may sound clichéd, but it truly does. Going for my customary wintertime hikes through what seems like God pouring out his heavenly being sized water bottle on my head helps me to think more clearly. I am a bit of a control freak. Cancel that. I am a control freak. I like things in their proper places and thoroughly planned out. I like organization and completeness. I like all of the books on the shelves to be lined up in height order and the bed to have hospital corners. This doesn’t mean that I am inflexible. I can roll with the punches. I thrive mak
