in her own words...
A wise-ish friend recently reminded me that you can’t claim to be either witty or cool -- you have to actually demonstrate it. Of course, that same friend also thinks that schadenfreude is a type of liquor, so I take his wisdom with a grain of salt. It is true, however, that it's not beneath me to use biggish words in an attempt to get a laugh (see "schadenfreude"), and that my favorite Sunday activity is getting my b&*t kicked by the NY Times crossword. (So that last confession takes me out of the running for "cool." ;)) But it’s not like I’m overly cerebral (just spellchecked "cerebral"). I mean, you don’t have to be bright to collect items with Che Guevara’s face and put them in your living room, right? And it doesn’t take a genius to nearly get in trouble for bringing in cigars from a certain island into the US. I’ll admit that I have a taste for fun involving gatherings, but at the end of the day, what I find to be even more fun than being surrounded by great friends -- snuggling with that one special guy after everyone goes. When I’m in love, I have that warm, happy feeling that comes from both treasuring my partner and being treasured by him. And even if you and I can’t agree that the History Channel should be renamed the Hitler Channel, I’m guessing we’ll click on everything that truly matters. About you: Your first response to my telling you “We have tickets to the roller derby on Friday night” is “Hell, yeah!” You give money to the homeless, even though you know all the rational arguments against it. You’d foot the bill for dinner, especially if your friend doesn’t quite have the means that you do. You’re passionate: about the Giants or Obama or what you do for a living. You think Vonnegut’s overrated but won’t pass up the latest Michael Lewis book. You can hold a conversation with my friend's mail order bride you met at a party without condescending. You think hard about the best gift to give someone for a holiday. You love being in love.
